Loosening the Cords: A Prayer for Letting Go and Spiritual Healing

Updated: Jan 9

My Story Behind This Prayer

Woman journaling on the beach — a quiet space for prayer and healing

I have reread this several times, and I feel like it can apply to many of my life trials — to anyone seeking spiritual healing. Some challenges I can walk away from, walk through, or breathe my way out of, but others feel like deeper emotional wounds I struggle to move on from.

I had this conversation with God six months after another driver totaled my car — the second time it happened in just one year.

At that intersection, I would scan carefully when the light turned green and repeat to myself, “Please don’t hit me,” as I drove through.

If you’d like to learn more about me and my story, you can read it here.

As I drove, I replayed the scene — the other driver denying they ran the red light, the witnesses offering help, and the insurance company assigning partial fault. Each time I passed that light, I felt fear, gratitude, frustration, and anger — for months, until I said this prayer. My own quiet prayer for healing.

“It holds me like a rope. It feels like it weakens me, keeps me stuck, deviates my ship.”

My Spiritual Healing Prayer

Person walking away from a rope — symbol of letting go and spiritual healing.

Please unravel the burden of this from me.

From my body, from my brain, from my heart.

Please continue to unravel from around my body, from around my throat, from around my soul.

Help me to be loose from this challenge.

It holds me like a rope. It feels like it weakens me, keeps me stuck, deviates my ship.

Loosen the cords that hold me bound. The cords of disappointment, of feeling wronged, of injustice, of anger, frustration, judgment, entitlement, greed, pride, expectation.

Loosen those from me that I can unwind them, so I can heal from the wounds that I have been infecting, festering, neglecting.

So that I can remove the irritation from my body, mind, and soul.

So that I will be able to move forward.

God’s Response

God:

Rest from this burden. You don't have to carry it.

You are doing the winding. You have all control to unwind yourself. You have all power to loosen, drop, and walk away from the restraint.

It is all made up.

It's not real.

You created it.

After this conversation with God, I no longer relive it. I can now drive through that light without being flooded by emotions.
